The Compliment That Stopped Me
SPEAKER_00Have you ever had someone tell you something about yourself that just completely caught you off guard? Recently, I had not one, not two, but three people tell me the same thing. They told me, Leslie, you are so consistent. And even more than that, they said, or one of them said, I want to be as consistent as you. And I remember thinking to myself, wait, me? Are you talking about me? Consistent? Because if I'm being totally honest, I don't always feel consistent. I get bored, I shift directions, I have lots of ideas. And sometimes I question if I'm doing too much or not enough. So hearing that, it stopped me in my tracks and it made me ask this question: What if consistency doesn't look the way we think it does? So today we're going to talk about consistency, but not in the way that you've probably heard it before. We're talking about a kind of consistency that doesn't box you in, but actually gives you freedom. So let's get ready to dive in. Hey friend, welcome back to Joyful Order Live. And you're welcome to your joyful order webinar consistency. And tell me what the motivation and your girlfriend is. And today's conversation is definitely personal because I think a lot of us carry this quiet belief of I'm not consistent. But what if that actually isn't true? What if you are consistent? It just is not in the things that matter most to you. So I started reflecting and I realized that there are actually areas of my life where I am very consistent. That is my time with God, my walks every day, serving at my church, showing up for my family, following through with commitments. Those are just some of the things that I'm really consistent in. And then it just hit me. I'm not inconsistent. I am consistent at what I am rooted in. And maybe that's true for you also. Because here's the truth consistency is not about doing everything, it's about being aligned with what matters most. I want to give you a framework that has completely shifted how I see this. And I'm calling it rooted rhythm. Consistency that flows. So when I refer back to a rooted rhythm, it's a little bit of a tongue twister there. But this is what I am rounding this episode in because real consistency isn't just rigid, it is rooted, and it's rooted in something that is deep. And when
Consistency Starts With Your Roots
SPEAKER_00you're rooted, you can actually flourish. So let's first talk about the root. This is where your identity and your values take seed. All right. Consistency doesn't start with habits, it actually starts with your identity. Who are you becoming? For me, I'm a woman who seeks God daily, who values growth, and who shows up for people that I love. So my consistency flows from that. I am rooted in God, in values that nourish and grow me, and showing up for the people that are most important in my life. And I want to um kind of touch upon John 15, 5. The scripture, it says, abide in me and you will bear much fruit. Now, when you're rooted, it's important that you have a root system that is nourished, that is watered, that the soil is tended to in order for it to bear fruit. So if I want to grow in my relationship with God, if I want to have a good relationship with my family, I must abide in God and wait patiently for that fruit to flourish. Because fruit doesn't just come from striving, it actually comes from being rooted.
Sacred Rhythms That Build Habits
SPEAKER_00The second thing to help you along in this is not just knowing what you're rooted in, which is your identity and your values, but creating rhythms. And these are sustainable patterns that are going to allow you to thrive. This is where your habits come in. There is a book. It's called Sacred Rhythms. I have it right here. I walked through this book uh last year in my disciple group. It's called Sacred Rhythms, and it's arranging our lives for spiritual transformation. And the author is Ruth Haley Barton. This is the cover right here. That book basically solidified my daily rhythms for me. That book was a great resource to reinforce what I already had in place. If you are looking to put some of these sacred rhythms into place, I highly recommend that as a good read that you can walk through and really study and learn how you can create these sacred rhythms in your life. But a sacred rhythm, what is it? These are things that are life-giving and repeatable. And this is what's important to know. There's research that says that it takes anywhere from like 18 to even 200 days to form a habit. And on average, it's about like maybe anywhere from 70 to 90 days for someone to actually create a habit. Some people it takes a little bit longer. Maybe you're more like the 200. Maybe for you, it's a little less. You're more around the 18 to 20 days to create a habit. But what it means is that consistency is built slowly. Creating rhythms is a slow process. It's not something that you rush through. And it's something that you create over time, not overnight. We are in such a like hustle culture, go, go, go. We want instant gratification all the time. We want to plant the seed and eat the fruit on the same day. God doesn't work like that, y'all. No. God plants. We have to teal the soil, right? We have to water it. We have to take the worms out. We have to let it grow roots. We have to let it bear leaves. We have to let it bear fruit. We have to first see the blossoms before it even bears fruit. When you look at what the process is of gardening, there's so much correlation to it of us in life and creating sacred rhythms and habits that are going to allow us to flourish and to be consistent. It's so important that these sacred rhythms also are planted in your identity and in what your pillars and your values are. So just a reminder that consistency is built slowly. And the big takeaway from here is just creating those sustainable patterns that are going to allow you to thrive. And when you sit and look at what is most important to you, what are the values? What is the identity that of who you want to be? It's important that you look at the habits that you have and if they support the person that you want to be, or your identity in God, your identity in who you are creating a path to become? Is going out and partying every weekend? Is that your identity, who you want to become? That habit? Is scrolling mindlessly for the first two hours of the day? Is that leading you to become the person that you want to be? What are the habits that are going to sustain you in creating these sacred rhythms?
Flow Without Losing Your Anchor
SPEAKER_00Now, next, I want to talk about the flow of this all. Now, I will say if somebody had told me like five, six years ago, had given me that compliment, and I did take it as a compliment when someone said, Leslie, you're the most consistent person that I know. Had that person told me that like five or six years ago, I don't know that I would have taken it as a compliment. I would have been like, what do you mean? I might have taken a little bit of offense to that in thinking that that person maybe believed me to be like boring and predictable, because I think that is a stigma to consistency, is that you have to do the same thing over and over again, or that you have to be predictable or boring. If you've been listening to this episode, this is oh god, what is this episode? 127, 28, 29, we're somewhere there. I lost track. If you've been listening to any of these episodes, you will know that there is consistency in the theme of the conversations that I have, but not every podcast episode is a cookie cutter of the last. My guest. I have a different range of guests that are on here that discuss very different topics. It's important for us to know that there is flow and freedom in expressing your consistency. So seven years ago, again, going back, if I had received that, I might have taken offense. But now that I have learned that there is so many different variations to the word consistency, that it doesn't mean that I'm predictable or boring. I actually took it as a huge compliment because it is proven that I have bared fruit and that people are now seeing that. And I think it's important for us to hear this: that consistency does not mean the same thing every single day. It means staying anchored or rooted in the same truth while expressing it in different ways. So for me, that might look like a podcast one day, a coaching session another day, creating a reel or having a conversation with someone on another day. So my calling and my pillar is to help women to live with purpose and to bring joy and order into the everyday life. And that looks like recording a podcast episode here. That looks like offering coaching sessions, that looks like writing a Bible study, that looks like creating a journal where women can create these sacred rhythms in creating social media content, a reel, or having conversations, taking part in community groups so that I can encourage and equip women. All very different, but I am consistent in the same mission, which is to serve women, to live with purpose and joy and to bring order into the everyday life. Same mission, different expressions, and that's where flow and freedom come in and still being consistent. Now what happens over time if you identify and root yourself in what is important to you, if you create rhythms, sustainable patterns that are gonna lead you to being consistent, you find expression through it, you're gonna bear fruit, friend. That's what it is. You are gonna bear fruit when you stay rooted and you keep showing up, something starts to grow. You start to have confidence, there's a spiritual maturity that comes with it. You start to have an impact, you start to trust more, you start to carry the capacity just a little bit lighter. In Galatians 6, 9, it says, Let us not grow weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest. This was one of my verses of the year. Um, I think it was about like three, maybe even four years ago. And this verse was just a reminder because as I was in the season of constantly being consistent and not seeing the fruit, I was growing weary. I definitely was. And I think I can't fully say that I am like bearing the fruit right now. Little buds are there. You can you can smell the blossoms, like they're there, just ready to like pop. But the fruit is growing where others are able to see it. And I'm not, I mean, not at all trying to like give myself a pat on the back or anything, please. I I want to remain fully humble because all of this is because of God. And I truly believe that God used those people to deliver that message to me, to tell me something so simple as in Leslie, you're the most consistent person that I know, or Leslie, I I strive to be as consistent as you are. Those compliments I really feel were little like God little post-it notes sent to me to just remind me to keep going. Because what has taken six, seven years of consistent work, of sacred rhythms and flowing and doing work in my purpose, others are starting to see that work and others are starting to be impacted by it. Have I grown weary? Yes. Have I wanted to give up every other day? Am I struggling still even today to keep going? Yes. Do I question my worth? Absolutely. Do I have fear? Yes. Do I struggle with anxiety? Absolutely. Do I get stressed out? Yes. But I keep going, friend, because I am rooted in my calling and my pillar and what keeps me going every single day.
Why Consistency Feels So Hard
SPEAKER_00Now, I want to talk a little bit about why we struggle. Why is it so hard to be consistent in the things that we are passionate about? Now, I want to talk about why we struggle. Why do we feel so inconsistent? And here's a few reasons. We think consistency is perfection. That was me, y'all. I've talked about I am a recovering perfectionist. In order to be consistent, I felt that it had to be perfect, which meant it had to be the same thing every single day. Every single day. And that, my friend, was boring and that would drive me nuts. So I felt that I was failing because I wasn't being perfect at being consistent. Hence the thought of like me thinking that consistency or that I was not a consistent person because there were things that I just failed miserably at. I wasn't perfect. A couple of other reasons that we feel that we are not inconsistent is that we try to do too much at once. That was me. We chase motivation instead of a rhythm. We want just the quick fix. We want to just read the devotion. We just want the devotion and the like the one Bible verse that's just going to speak good and make me feel good. And, you know, just be like the little cheerleader and like, oh, yay, I got like my little dose of, you know, feel good and let me go. We don't want to sit with the word and marinate it and let it convict us, really, because we don't want to change. We don't want to fix what's broken. Like, why do I want to sit and deal with all this mess? Like, no, I just want the feel-good stuff of the Jesus juice. Like, no, just give me my little, my little kick of Jesus juice and then let me keep going. Don't don't give me the vegetables. Don't make me eat the broccoli or the Brussels sprouts because that stuff, it it just's not good. Right? There's someone sitting out there that's like, I love Brussels sprouts, and yeah. That's not me. That's why I said Brussels sprouts. Uh, but y'all get me on that, right? You don't want to sit and do the internal work that God is calling you to do. So you are constantly chasing something that you're not gonna get to because you're not willing to do the work. God's calling you to a greater calling, but you don't want to unpack the emotional baggage that is holding you down. You don't want to plant roots as a hurting friend. Am I am I like kind of stepping on some toes right now? I'm doing that because y'all, I was there. Like I I'm kind of still there now, where I'm just okay, God, what do I need to unpack now? I'm a mess. I know it. I'm not perfect, I know it. Yet God is still using me. And there were there were things that God has revealed to me that will come in a time and a place when I am ready for. And I just keep seeing little glimmers of that, like that it's getting closer and closer. It's coming because I have remained consistent. I have created sacred rhythms that are allowing me to grow. I have created roots and things that are most important for me. And oftentimes we don't want to do the hard work. We just want the fruit to be given to us, right? Again, going back to we want to plant the seeds and eat the fruit in the same day. And here's another thing, my friends, of why we feel inconsistent. It's because you don't have clarity on what actually matters. And this is partly why I created the coaching that I did of my clarity coaching, because I think that is a huge component of what is missing for women to walk purposefully and joyfully in their God-given calling because they don't have clarity of it. And we don't have clarity because we're trying to chase too much, we're trying to do like all the things, we're not rooted, and our identity is not in Christ, our identity is chasing a platform. I'm sorry, that might have hurt a little bit. Y'all, I was there. Like I I am telling you stuff that God had to reveal inside of me that I was kind of convicted of. It is so important that you have clarity on the things that are important to you because God cannot do in you what He is calling you to do unless you unpack all of that stuff and you get clear on what are your pillars. And it starts with creating sacred rhythms. And here's another hard truth, friend. You're ready consistent. You are you are consistent. I have coaching clients that oftentimes will say, like, oh, I don't I lack discipline, I'm not consistent. I it's hard for me to create habits. Do you take a shower every day? Do you brush your teeth every day? Do you breathe? Do you go to the bathroom? Do you eat? These these are all habits that keep you alive, friend. So you're doing habits. Like you know how to do them, you're disciplined at breathing, right? Because if you don't breathe, what's the alternative of that? You're dead. Okay, so you are pretty consistent and you've created discipline in things that are important to you. Breathing is important, eating is important, brushing your teeth. I hope y'all brush your teeth every day, all right? Taking a shower every day. These are things that are on autopilot, these are habits that we do every single day, and we do them because it's part of life. It is important for us to function and do those habits every day, and we put them on autopilot. What if we looked at opening the Bible and praying as a lifeline, as much as braving is to where that becomes on almost an autopilot? You're very consistent. I promise you, there's someone listening right now that is very consistent in overthinking. There is someone very consistent in checking their email before they open their Bible first thing in the morning. There is someone that is very consistent in scrolling and wasting time on social media before reading the Bible. There is someone here that's listening that is very consistent at avoiding conflict. You're consistent friend, but it's just figuring out what is important to you to be consistent in. So the goal isn't to become consistent because you already are consistent, it's just to redirect your consistency and redefined your identity and your roots.
Simple Steps To Start Today
SPEAKER_00Now, I want to talk practical now. There's some practical application that will just make this simple for you. If you're feeling stuck, here is where you want to start. One, you need to get clear on your roots. It's that easy. What actually matters most in your life right now? And I want you to write this down. One, get clear on your roots. I'm gonna repeat, what actually matters most in your life right now? Two, is you need to choose just two to three rhythms that are gonna sustain you and that are rooted in what your identity and your like pillars are. So just choose two to three, not 10, not 12, just a few that you can return to daily or weekly. I have a morning routine, and this was something uh one of the people that had uh said that I was so consistent, and they were like, Oh, I wish I could be more like you, because they were pertaining to my morning routine. Of a morning routine, if I read a devotional, I do a gratitude, my gratitude goals and prayer journal. I write in that every single day. I soap a Bible verse and I pray. That's my daily morning routine. There was a point in my life when all I could do was a morning devotion. All I did was read the devotion, and that was it. I started there. And then I added my goals and gratitude and prayer journal. That was the second layer. Once I mastered just the devotion, I was like, you know, I think I have capacity. I'm making time in the morning to make sure I get up and read the devotion. And my devotion takes me two minutes to read. I have maybe another five, 10 minutes that I can write gratitude, goals, and prayer. And then once I got that down, then I stacked my soap in the morning. And that's my Bible study time. That takes a little bit longer. Habit stacking. This is this is where my coaching hat comes out. Habit stacking is the way to go. Create habits or these rhythms based on something that you are already grounded in or that you already have a habit in. If you have a habit of reaching for your phone in the morning and scrolling mindlessly, why don't you put your phone on top of your Bible so that it will serve as a reminder to open the Bible before you open your phone? That is how we start creating rhythms slowly to allow us to begin to be consistent in the things that we want to be rooted in. Now, the next thing, number three, is give yourself permission to flow. And that is that you don't have to show up the same way every day. For instance, I shared what my morning routine looks like uh today because I am uh recording two podcasts in one day, which I normally don't do. So if you are listening to this and you hear me fumble my words a lot, it's because I just recorded like a whole hour-long conversation interview with another guest, and I'm just like I'm winded and I'm like that is not an audio error. That is me expressing my words are coming out right now. I normally don't ever stack two podcast episodes, and see I just start like blabbering here. I just word vomited all over you guys. Um, let me backtrack. Hold on. What were we talking about? Giving yourself permission to flow. There you go. Uh, the morning routine that I have, it looked different today because my day was gonna be different. So let me grab this book. There's another book I'm gonna recommend to y'all. Uh, I am doing a discipleship group right now. And in that group, we are reading Practicing the Way, and it's saying, Be with Jesus, become like him, do as he did. It's by John Mark Comer. He is a great author. I've read, I think this is his third book that I'm reading now. And I had to read for my group today because I have my group. Instead of doing my devotion, my gratitude journal, my soap, I read 10 pages in there and I did the pages in my workbook. It looks different, but it's still rooted in that I want to spend time with Jesus every day, rooted in my faith foundation, my faith root right there that is important for me. I still got my Jesus fixed. I still learned about God. I still made time for me to grow in my faith and my relationship with God. But it just looked different. Do you hear me? Do you get where I'm going? Do you see it? You need to give yourself permission to flow in your consistency. And that's for you to figure out what are the different things that you can do that is going to speak to that area or that route to help it flourish. And sometimes that even looks like I don't, I don't do my morning routine on the weekends because the weekends I like to go on long walks or hikes with my husband. We wake up and serve at church. So I don't have the time on the weekends. Or I should say it's not that I don't have the time. I don't put that time for the weekends because I kind of give myself a break in that. But I might listen to worship music in the morning. Um, I actually often listen to worship music in the morning. When we go on a hike, uh, sometimes I just will put my airpods in and I will listen to a sermon or worship music. Oftentimes that's if I'm doing like a solo hike, if I'm with my husband or a friend, I don't put earphones in because we just talk and chat and we, you know, converse. But there's so many different rhythms that don't keep me in a box that allows me to stay rooted to who I want to be and what's important to me and be consistent. So I'm still being consistent in time with God. It just looks different every day. Now, the fourth thing to uh kind of help you with practical application is to stay long enough to see fruit. This is where most people quit too early. This, my friend, this is something I am not a queer. I will hold on to things for so long. Um, I don't know, that's just like the achiever in me, I guess, too. I don't give up very easily on things. And this is maybe why I have been able to remain consistent because I have stayed true to seeing the fruit. And as I said earlier, allowing people to come and compliment me or hearing those compliments where God's, I feel like God sent them my way, was just a reminder that I stuck it out long enough to bear fruit. I didn't just plant and water and say, where's the fruit? and then walk away because it wasn't there overnight. I had to do the internal work. And I had to allow myself to dig up the stuff that God wanted me to get rid of, that God wanted me to uh kind of cultivate through so that the roots could be watered purposefully and intentionally, so that the fruit that I bear is good fruit. It's sweet, but it's sweet enough where people see it and they're like, Leslie, I want that. And that, my friend, is just ways that will help you to step into consistency and flourish in it also.
Faithful In The Small Things
SPEAKER_00Now, I want us to kind of stop here. This episode is kind of like a little bit of a Bible study. This episode comes with a study guide with these notes and these practical applications. And we're gonna do a little bit of a pause right here because I want to touch upon this scripture, Luke 16.10. Whoever can be trusted with very little can also be trusted with much. This is a scripture that if you are walking through this with the supplemental Bible study, which you can get on your joyfulorder.com. If you click there and just go to the shop, there is a link for all the downloadable free resources. Just look for episode 127 and you will see the notes there. But the scripture again, Luke 16, 10. This is a great scripture to kind of end this with in doing a soap on it. Is just looking at how you can be faithful in small things that matter deeply to God. What's an observation that you can take away from this? Consistency isn't measured by big moments, but it's built in the small, unseen ones. How can you apply this? I just gave you practical application. But I want you to think where in your life are you being invited to show up faithfully and consistent? Even when no one sees it, it is important because that is where your roots lie. Now, I want to just end with a little bit of encouragement. If you've ever been telling yourself, I'm not consistent, like I was, I want you to hear this today. That is not true, first off. You are already consistent. You just need realigning or you need clarity as to what your roots are. And if you're in a season where you're feeling scattered or uncleared or like you're doing a lot and you're not seeing the results of it, that is exactly why I am offering my clarity coaching sessions because clarity will change everything for you. When you're clear on your roots, consistency just becomes natural. And I will leave the details in the show notes. Uh, if you are ready to begin your clarity coaching sessions, just reach out. You can click the link by signing up directly, or you can DM me if you have more questions. And I would love to see you in my coaching sessions.
